We are Invited to the Table

Every once in a while I am overwhelmed by the thought that there are some things that aren’t designed for me to experience. I think this not from a place of defeat or depression, but from the knowledge that there are certain dreams I have placed on the back-burner of my heart and mind.

One of my most beloved movies from childhood (along with 2 million others, I am sure) is Hook. My absolute favorite part is when the Lost Boys and grown Peter Pan are sitting at the table to eat. It appears as though there is nothing to eat, but the boys are chomping down and smacking their lips as if it were the last meal of their lives. Of course “old salty” Peter cannot eat because he could not see what is in front of him. It is not until he allows his heart and mind to imagine that he sees a bountiful feast before him.

I’ve had times when I’m too mentally and emotionally fatigued to try to “dream again.” Then I come across scriptures like, “Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises” (Romans 4:20). My heart longs to trust the Lord like this again. I want to be brave enough to know when I am to be content, and when I am invited to dream.

I am lucky, blessed, and honored to be living life with some of the most authentic people I know. We appear to be in seasons of allowing ourselves to be caught up in the wonder of who He is. God is reviving and bringing new life and hope to old dreams that felt like they were beyond dead. We are like children waiting for Christmas presents.

Of course the goal is not to receive the gift, but to learn to trust the father more than before. He spoke to me a few weeks ago, and His words to me were: “Remember, daughter, you are invited to the table to dream and to feast with me. I will bless the dreams that are birthed out of a heart to honor me.”

I am inspired by the story in 1 Kings 3: 5-14. King Solomon candidly seeks after the heart of the Lord, and his heart’s dream is to lead the people of Israel with wisdom. The Lord is so pleased that he not only grants Solomon’s wish, but he also blesses him with riches and favor.

This story encourages my heart and reminds me that the promises of the Lord are not stale. They are new and fresh every morning and still available to us today when we seek first the kingdom of heaven.

We are invited into the king’s court to dine with him. To experience the fullness of him, and to delight in him and he, in turn, will delight in us. We may be too afraid to dare to dream again, but the Lord says when we align our hearts with his, he joyfully asks us, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you” (1 Kings 3:5b).

"…to Him is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond what we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory forevermore. Amen." -Ephesians 3:20
